Do caravans need an MOT?
You may be surprised to know that caravans don't need MOTs - instead, they come with their own set of rules. The owner of a caravan needs to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy, as well as having a range of other utilities such as electric and gas maintained for it to be safe enough for the roads.
Caravan servicing
It is important to get your caravan regularly serviced to ensure it is safe to transport. Caravans are somewhat different to cars - there is a range of additional checks that need to be conducted during a service. Like any other vehicle, the caravan's wheels and the brakes will be prioritised and need servicing once a year.
What does a caravan servicing involve?
Servicing is a more in-depth mechanical assessment of the vehicle, and there are various servicing options you could go for. Most garages offer an interim service or full services - which check different aspects of the vehicle's function.
A caravan servicing often includes all the servicing requirements of a car with extra checks, including:
- Chassis
- Running gear
- Body work
- Trims
- Gas systems
- Electrical systems
- Ventilation
- Water systems
- Fire and safety
- Carbon monoxide health check
Although servicing your caravan isn't required by law, many people get their caravan serviced to maintain the vehicle's value and prolong its lifespan.
How often should I change my caravan tyres
Caravans need to be capable of carrying excess weight - on a single axle; a tyre needs to carry at least half the weight of the caravan. This is why caravan tyres should be checked frequently - even though your caravan tyres aren't likely to be frequently used, the weight will cause the tyres to deteriorate. Excessive use in short bursts and strain can cause the weight to lean onto one part of the tyres, causing uneven tyre wear. It is recommended that caravan tyres should be replaced every five years.
