Do EVs need an MOT?
One of the benefits of making the switch to an electric vehicle is the many money saving incentives like not having to pay road tax, or for your car to be able to enter clean air zones. However, there are still services you need to pay for to ensure your car is road worthy. In this guide, we’ll explain why electric vehicles need an MOT and what’s involved.
Do electric vehicles need an MOT?
In short, yes. Electric vehicles do need an MOT. However, like most other vehicles, an MOT is not required until your vehicle is three years old. If your electric vehicle is under three years old, you do not legally need to have your vehicle MOT tested. Your first MOT will be due three years from the day your vehicle was registered.
Do I need to prepare for an EV MOT?
Preparing your electric vehicle for it’s MOT is the same as preparing for an MOT for any other vehicle. The main checks you should carry out include;
- Tyres: Failing your MOT because your tyre tread depth is below the legal limit is one of the most common reasons for failing your test. We always advise checking your tyre tread depth every few weeks, and not just before your MOT, to ensure your tyres are in good condition.
- Lights: Lights are another common MOT failure. You should perform a visual check to ensure they are all in working order. Often your fog lights and full beams get forgotten, so make sure to check these too.
- Brakes: Even though EVs have a regenerative braking system, they still have traditional hydraulic brakes. If your brakes feel spongy or soft then it’s a good idea to get them serviced before you book your MOT.
- Wipers and fluid: Another common fail is for your windscreen wipers and washers. To pass your MOT you must be able to keep your windscreen clear for visibility on the road. So keep your wiper fluid topped up and ensure your wipers don’t smear or scratch your windscreen.
