Why you should buy a vehicle with a full-service history
When buying a used car, there are many aspects to consider – you may be tempted to make your new car purchase based on a reasonable price, or a flashy new design. However, have you ever thought of its service history?
Knowing the entire service history (FSH) can help you retain the value of your car, while also informing you of any major changes or repair work made to the vehicle. What is a full-service history?
A full-service history provides information about any repair work, maintenance checks or major changes that have been made to your car by both the manufacturers and approved garages. Buying a vehicle with a FSH is highly recommended because it tells you important information such as when your oil was last changed, when your wheels were last aligned and other essential aspects. A FSH can also give you a clue about any recurrent issues happening with your car, and exactly what work needs to be carried out.
There is minor debate as to what exactly a full-service history is. Whilst some people accept a full record from both manufacturer and garage, others only consider a full-service history as being updates from the manufacturer only.
How do I know if my car has been fully serviced?
A full service will show if your car’s service book has been stamped with receipts for the specific work – it will be updated with specifics such as mileage, services and other details. Some manufacturers now log services online - however, you should be able to still get a physical copy of the service document.
Some cars do not have an FSH - instead, they may come with a ‘part service history’. This is when a car has been serviced, however not as regularly as the manufacturer recommendations. A vehicle with a part service history may not be as reliable as a FSH, as there is no telling how many details are being missed. For instance, the car could have gone many years without a change in filter or oil, which consequentially has more of an effect on the engine.

When should my car be serviced?
With most modern cars, as part of the diagnostics, it’s likely a service light may flash up to indicate when your next maintenance is required. You can also consult your manufacturers manual or website.
General guidance recommends that you should service your vehicle every 12,000 miles or every 12 months, depending on whichever milestone you reach sooner. For interim services, the recommendations suggest every 6,000 miles or every six months. The regularity of your car being repaired will also depend on your driving style, for example, those who brake and accelerate harshly are more likely to need more regular services.
