When is it time for an air con recharge?
Have you ever been in the car on a hot day and switched on your air conditioning to be greeted with hot air that won't cool down? If so, it's time to have your air conditioning recharged! Learn everything you need to know about what air conditioning recharging is, how often you should have it and why you need it from our detailed guide.
Why do I need an air con recharge?
Air conditioning works to 'condition' the air - not only cooling it down but reducing moisture, which is why you can use it in winter to rapidly demist your windscreen. Air conditioning works to cool down the air in your vehicle through a complex process of evaporation, compression and expansion. The refrigerant gas in the air conditioning system constantly shifts from gas to liquid and back to gas and this is what conditions the air.
Over time, the refrigerant gas in your air conditioning system is lost due to the constant shifting from gas to liquid. When gas is lost, the cooling abilities of your air conditioning decrease and your system will need to be recharged to keep it cooling the air effectively.
When refrigerant gas decreases your engine needs to work harder to keep the air conditioning working which increases your fuel consumption.
How often should I have an air con recharge?
It's recommended you should have your air conditioning recharged every 3 - 4 years. As refrigerant gas permeates through the system at an average rate of 10% a year, it's beneficial to have your air conditioning system recharged this often to ensure your system is working as effectively as possible.
Air conditioning does not get recharged as part of an MOT test or a standard service, so it's important that you ensure this is serviced separately if you have any concerns.
Signs I need an air con recharge
There are various signs and symptoms you need to look out for which indicate you may need your air conditioning system recharged. Some of these include:
- Hot air is emitted instead of cold air
- There is excessive noise when the air conditioning system is on
- Bursts of cold air when emitting warm air
- Weaker flow of air
Keep your air con healthy
To keep your air conditioning working effectively, you should try to use it more frequently. Many people only use their air conditioning when it's hot, but, contrary to popular belief, you can also use it in winter to remove condensation from your windscreen. This also prevents the hoses and belt from drying out - so it's actually recommended you use your air conditioning regularly throughout the year.
