Electric vehicle myths: solved

Electric vehicle myths: solved

Making the transition to an electric vehicle can be overwhelming. There are many questions you may ask before you buy an EV. Are EVs expensive? Does it take a long time to charge an EV? PTA’s helpful article is here to bust the most common EV myths.

EVs are not suited to long-distance journeys

Range anxiety is something you may worry about with an EV. You might wonder if they’re suited for long-distance driving. Most electric vehicles have an average range of 197 miles. Other models, like the Polestar 3 and Porsche Taycan, have an extended range, making it easier to do family road trips or long commutes around the country.

Electric vehicle batteries cannot be recycled

Another myth you may have heard is that EV batteries are not recyclable or end up in landfills. Like your smartphone, an electric vehicle battery uses the same lithium-ion technology to charge your vehicle. Many manufacturers, like Kia and Audi, offer a seven or eight-year EV battery warranty. If your EV battery comes to the end of its life, it can be recycled or repurposed.

You must pay road tax on your EV

Do electric vehicles pay road tax? How car tax is currently calculated is based on your vehicle’s emissions. Zero-emission EVs don’t incur road tax, but this will change in 2025, so it’s important to research your model to ensure it doesn’t break the bank.

EVs break down more than conventional vehicles

Statistically, EVs break down less as they have fewer moving parts than a combustion vehicle. An electric vehicle requires less maintenance, as the EV’s braking system can last longer due to regenerative braking.

It takes a long time to charge an electric vehicle

One of the most notable differences between a combustion vehicle and an EV is how long it takes to refuel. There are things that you can do to speed up the EV charging process, including:

  • Installing an EV charger at home.
  • Visiting your nearest fast or ultra-fast EV charging station.
